In 1973, families built homes way out in the country in a new Violet Township subdivision they named Chevington Woods. This neighborhood was way out in the country at the time and the early 70s lifestyle and the dreams of many who lived here gave rise to the small community pool we enjoy today.
The developer deeded land to them for a park or recreation center to serve the neighborhood. Though they were not rich in the money sense, the wealth of their love for their families and their commitment to this new community created a way of life that was hewn through hard work and sacrifice. They organized themselves, committed money by selling bonds to each other for $400 per family and with the money they constructed a recreation complex, combining the talents of many with the meager resources they had to build a small community pool which we know today as the “Chevington Woods Recreation Club” Many were managers, swim team presidents, coaches, meet referees, volunteers and “fix it up chappies” and though difficult, the results of their dream lives on today and has served thousands of families in the past forty nine years. We still rely on volunteers and those talented with tools and words to keep the pool alive.
For those of us who have served the community in this capacity, it is a burden and a pleasure each year, and the reward is seeing our children grow up in a safe place, doing fun things, and making lifelong friends at the pool. The biggest compliment to this legacy of service is that many children who grew up at the pool in the 70s, now are members and bring their own children and grandchildren here to enjoy the same pool we all know and love!
Thank you for your vision and sacrifice so that we have the privilege of living in a community with so many wonderful people and families enjoying our very own, neighborhood pool!
Written when we celebrated 40 years, nine years ago:
Once upon a time, forty years ago, families built homes way out in the country, on a farm field they named Chevington Woods. The developer deeded land to them for a park or recreation center to serve the neighborhood. Though they were not rich in the money sense, the wealth of their love for their families and their commitment to this new community created a way of life that was hewn through hard work and sacrifice. They organized themselves, raised money by selling bonds to each other for $400 per family and with the money they constructed a recreation complex, combining the talents of many with the meager resources they had to build a small community pool which we know today as the “Chevington Woods Recreation Club” Many were managers, swim team presidents, coaches, meet referees, volunteers and fix it up chappies and their children were lifeguards and all regularly swam at the pool each and every Summer. Though difficult at times over the years, the results of their dream lives on today and has served thousands of families in the past forty years. We still rely on volunteers and those talented with tools and words to keep the pool alive. For those of us who have served the community in this capacity, it is a burden and a pleasure each year, and the reward is seeing our children grow up in a safe place, doing fun things, and making lifelong friends at the pool. The biggest compliment to this legacy of service is that many children who grew up at the pool in the 70s, now are members and bring their own children and grandchildren here to enjoy the same thing!
